Programs I Use
Please keep in mind that I'm not an expert in computers or coding, but I like reading about other people's setups, so I thought I'd give it a try.
- Cmus
- Very simple and lightweight command line music player.
- Firefox
- My regular internet browser. Since Firefox sends a lot of personal data to Mozilla via telemetry these days, I hardened it with Arkenfox's user.js file. In short, this script changes some core settings in Firefox to increase user privacy and reduce the possibility of fingerprinting.
- Links
- Outside of my regular internet browser I use Links, an internet browser that works entirely within the terminal emulator of your choice. It automatically blocks CSS and JavaScript and is perfect for browsing the more minimal websites.
- Nano
- While I know I might earn the scorn of all Vim enthusiasts for saying this, I use Nano as my regular text editor. I started using it at the beginning and kept using it because it just worked for me. I edited the configuration file to make it look and function a little better.
- Openbox
- Instead of a desktop environment I use a window manager and my window manager of choice is Openbox. It is lightweight, fast and the configuration files are easy to edit. I use LXAppearance and LXAppearance-ObConf to edit the appearance.
- Ranger
- Lightweight file manager that works entirely within the terminal emulator of your choice, allowing me to browse my files quickly and smoothly.
- Tint2
- Highly customizable and a very simple and lightweight taskbar.
- Xterm
- Very lightweight program with a lot of customizability via the configuration file. I use Terminus as my terminal font.
